Located along the banks of the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana, The Vista is a 14,000-square-foot event center designed to create a one-of-a-kind gathering space within Origin Park. The facility combines an expressive architectural design, sustainable building systems, and extensive landscaping to form a meaningful connection between the building and its natural surroundings.
A Distinctive Mass-Timber Structure
One of the project’s defining features is its hybrid mass-timber glulam structure. More than 300 wood purlins, rafters, and beams, along with tongue-and-groove decking, come together to form the building’s signature curved design. The structure’s longest span reaches approximately 109 feet.
The mass-timber system was integrated with approximately 22 tons of structural steel, curved masonry walls, wood and metal stud framing, and a standing-seam metal roof. Because the building incorporates few straight edges, its construction required extensive surveying and careful coordination among multiple trades.
Connections between wood, steel, and masonry were studied closely throughout the buyout and construction process to ensure that the complex structural components aligned precisely in the field.
Building with the Landscape
The five-acre site presented its own set of challenges, including 11 different soil profiles. Soil stabilization was required beneath the building pad and drive lanes to establish a reliable foundation for construction.
Rather than relying on traditional curb-and-gutter drainage, the site uses underdrains and landscaped green spaces to collect and manage stormwater runoff. The completed landscape includes approximately 3,900 trees, shrubs, perennials, and bioswale plantings, complemented by dry-stacked stone walls with integrated boulders.
Approximately 13,000 square feet of pavers and 10,000 square feet of bonded aggregate paving further connect the facility with the surrounding park.
Thoughtful and Sustainable Design
Sustainability was incorporated throughout the project, including a geothermal system and solar panels. These features complement the use of exposed mass timber and reinforce the project’s relationship with its natural setting.
The project team also carefully managed the fabrication schedule for the custom glulam components, seasonal planting windows, soil requirements, and the coordination of the building’s many curved and intersecting elements.
An Award-Winning Team Effort
Delivering The Vista required the expertise and collaboration of more than 30 trade partners, along with the project’s owners, designers, craftspeople, and construction professionals.
Deanbuilds is honored to have brought Joseph & Joseph’s design to life and help create an enduring destination that will bring people together and serve the Southern Indiana community for generations to come. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this exceptional project.
